Business Law and Legal Research
For a business, it is critically important that decisions are made based of up-to-date, accurate information.
Legal research is like the gasoline in your car’s tank. A lawyer’s education usually consists of a four or five year university degree, then a three year law degree followed by one year of articling (similar to an apprenticeship). During this period much of the law is studied and learned.
During a lawyer's legal practice, the application of law takes place on a daily basis. Laws (Statutes) change. The interpretations of laws by the courts and the legal system change.
All this means that to be up-to-date with the law entails legal research*. The facts must be checked and confirmed, existing statutory law must be reviewed along with the associated regulations. Current information on the evolution and changes that have developed in respect to a specific legal situation has to be examined.
Lawyers have access to extensive research resources, as well as the training to identify and find the information they seek from the pool of available information, data, case results and judgements.
If you would like more detailed information on this topic and other areas of law, you can refer to the extensive resources of the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association at www.dialalaw.org - corporate and business legal information
* Meaning checking where the law has evolved or changed since the last research took place and the confirmation that what a lawyer remembers is correct .
