Taxation Law
We seldom think of taxation as a legal issue. Interestingly, however, there are a myriad of laws and regulations which impose taxes on us. From time to time those tax levies are incorrect. It is always wise (and economically efficient) to have a relationship with a lawyer and an accountant that will enable you to have the correct information before taxes are paid.
Legal Research
This is like the gasoline in your car’s tank. A lawyer’s education usually consists of a four or five year university degree, then a three year law degree followed by one year of articling (similar to an apprenticeship). During this period much of the law is initially studied and learned. After that the application of law takes place on a daily basis. This entails legal research*, checking and confirming the facts, reviewing the existing statutory law and associated regulations, as well as up-to-date information on the evolution and changes that have developed in respect to a specific legal situation. Lawyers have access to extensive research resources, as well as the training to identify and find the information they seek from the pool of available information, data, case results and judgements, and so on.
If you would like more detailed information on this topic and other areas of law, you can refer to the extensive resources of the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association at www.dialalaw.org - corporate and business legal information
* Meaning the confirmation that what a lawyer remembers is correct, checking what may be forgotten and checking where the law has evolved or changed since the last research took place.
